How to start baby food diversification?

At what age ?

Diversification generally begins between the 4th and 6th month of the child. It depends on his state of health, his development and/or the capacities of his digestive system. In any case, only your pediatrician (or your doctor) is able to decide on the beginning of your baby's food diversification. Your little one should therefore be exclusively fed milk until your doctor has told you about any changes.

Food diversification: how to start?

Whatever your child's age, food diversification must start gently. Milk should also remain the basis of your child's diet until around 12 months old.

The first foods that baby will be able to taste are tender, non-fibrous vegetables (carrot, zucchini, green bean, white leek, etc.). Introduce them to your infant in the form of a smooth puree after having cooked the vegetables (preferably steamed to preserve all their nutrients). To gradually familiarize him with these new foods, first introduce a single food at a time: carrot puree, zucchini puree, white leek puree... Mixed fruits (cooked beforehand) can supplement baby's diet about two weeks after the introduction of vegetables.

At the start of food diversification, your little one may be reluctant to eat the recommended amount of food. This is completely normal: these new discoveries are for him a big change that requires some time to adapt. With patience, everything will be fine! Start small with a few spoonfuls, then try to add a little more each day. In any case, there is no reason to worry: an infant always eats his fill; on days when he consumes less solid food than expected, he will compensate with milk.
