Infant Milk

Everything you need to know about 2nd age milk (or follow-on milk)

Are you looking for information on infant formula? Do you want to know when to switch to infant formula? Babybio tells you everything you need to know about infant formula!

What is infant formula?

Baby formula is an infant milk specially designed to accompany the beginnings of baby's dietary diversification from the age of 6 months. It is generally prescribed by the pediatrician when the child is able to eat at least one meal a day fully diversified (therefore without milk).

The 2nd age milk is proposed in powder or in liquid form (directly bottled). To be called "follow-on milk" in the trade, it must be produced from cow's milk or goat's milk proteins.

What is the composition of follow-on milk?

Follow-on milk is made from animal milk (cow's or goat's milk, in accordance with European regulations), to which various nutrients (iron, calcium, vitamins, minerals, etc.) are added to meet the nutritional needs of the baby at the time of diversification, in accordance with the regulations.

The European regulation imposes several rules concerning the composition of infant milk 2nd age with in particular:

- The contribution of proteins must be between 1.6 and 2.5 g/100 kcal.

- The carbohydrate content must be between 9 and 14 g/100 kcal.

- DHA intake should be between 20 and 50 mg/100 kcal.

- The fat intake should be between 4.4 and 6g/100 kcal.

- Vitamins and minerals to meet the baby's nutritional needs

When should I switch to infant formula?

Baby formula is generally prescribed by the pediatrician at the beginning of the baby's dietary diversification - from the child's sixth month.  Follow-up milk will therefore be an element of the diversified diet. However, be careful: even if your child has started diversifying before he is 6 months old, it is important not to give him follow-on milk before that age, as the protein content of the formula is not sufficient to meet his needs. As a reminder, whatever the age of your baby, a change of milk should only be made after a favorable opinion from the pediatrician.

Baby formula can also be used as a complement and/or relay to breastfeeding (by alternating infant milk and breast milk): however, it is necessary to wait until baby eats at least one diversified meal per day before switching to follow-on milk.

Whatever your situation, it is of course essential to ask your pediatrician's (or doctor's) advice before starting to give your child a bottle of infant formula.

Which infant formula should I choose for my baby?

All the infant milks 2nd ages available in the trade are subjected to the same rules of composition. However, by choosing a Babybio organic infant formula, you can be sure that the milk comes from animals raised in France (with access to the open air and respect for animal welfare), and mainly fed with grass or organic fodder. This eco-responsible gesture guarantees that you are feeding your baby with infant milk that respects both the European regulations concerning infant milk and the regulations governing the manufacture of organic products.
